 This was the room I shared with Katie and Ali at the ryokan in Shibuya.  Tokyo 2016, Applicant City for the Summer Olympics. I hope they get it, so I have an excuse to come back!  These are colorful banners that were outside of the Ryogoku Kokugikan. I read later that apparently these banners represent the wrestlers.  Nihon Sumo Kyoukai (Japanese Sumo Association).   The first of many, many pictures that I took this day... I won't comment on every one.        This guy impressed us because he's not Asian and also wasn't nearly as big as the other wrestlers. Still, you can see how muscular he is. He was in the matches in the morning, for lower-class wrestlers.      This is the schedule of wrestling for the day... We were pretty far away so it's very hard to read. This sign would light up depending on who won each bout and stay lit for the entire day; essentially a scoreboard like at any other sporting event.  So this white powder is salt. The wrestlers throw it on the ring in order to purify the ring before the bout, as the ring is considered sacred.   This is a portrait of Asashoryu, one of the current Yokozuna (the top rank in sumo).  The last few matches of the day that everyone was looking forward to. The final matched featured Asashoryu, and the second to last one featured Hakuho (the other yokozuna). Both of them are Mongolian.    So for the next tier up, the bigger names came out and displayed their colorful getups, which apparently are given to them by sponsors once they reach a certain level, and are very expensive.
